Whale watching spots in South Africa

Part 2

We all know Hermanus takes the number 1 spot for whale watching towns in South Africa, but where else can you see them? Let's find out:

Local is lekker - Kenton-on-sea is lucky to have many beautiful beaches in the area that are perfect for whale watching. For example, A stretch of gravel road that runs between Kenton and Alexandria, known as The Golden Mile, is particularly breathtaking as you have a panoramic sea view from high atop the hills. On a clear day you can see for miles out to sea. Its a beautiful drive that ends by going through part of the pristine forests of The Addo nature reserve. And best of all, It's free!

Plettenberg Bay - The whales can sometimes swim mere meters from the shore and are clearly visible for some spectacular shore and cliff based whale watching outings. Good whale viewing sites are Plettenberg Park, Robberg Peninsula in the Robberg Nature Reserve, No 1 Beachy Head Drive, Beacon Island Rocks, Van Plettenberg Monument, Lookout Rocks, The Lookout View site and spectacular viewing along Keurboomstrand beaches and look out points.

The Wild Coast, Eastern Cape - As the name suggests, this area is an unspoiled wilderness with much of the coastline being virtually inaccessible to all but those that are prepared to hike or go on horseback. The migrating whales don’t tend to come as close to the coastline here as they do in other areas so the best experience is via chartered boat.

KwaZulu Natal - The KwaZulu Natal coast can easily boast the highest number of whale sightings with humpback whales being frequently seen. The most popular towns are Richards Bay and St. Lucia, both have charter companies that take touring groups out to sea for up close and personal viewing experiences.
